University sends acceptance letters with AR, and it's blowing minds

Getting a college letter of acceptance is huge enough, but this one includes the magic of augmented reality.

The Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in China is issuing out its letters of acceptance to students suing AR.

Students first scan a QR code on WeChat, which prompts the download of NPU's AR app.

Upon opening the app, students will be able to see a virtual model of the university, including information about its history and find out more about its aeronautical, astronautical and marine engineering fields — subjects which the school is famous for.

This is the first AR-enabled acceptance letter to be sent out in China — and the concept appears to be a world first.

The NPU added that the AR tech was meant to show off the school's "cutting-edge" technology.

"Although the admission notice is just a piece of a paper, the carefully embedded AR technology serves to show a cutting-edge temperament and a sense of pride," Xie Dan, admissions office deputy director of NPU told state media outlet the People's Daily.

Chinese internet users however, weren't exactly impressed.

"What a waste of money..." said one user on Weibo.

"AR envelope? I rather receive a red envelope [a monetary gift given during special occasions]," another chimed in.

"As long as I get accepted into a university I don't mind if there's no AR," one added.

So much for instilling a sense of pride.
